Bringing international expertise together in Basel
From 3 to 6 June, Basel was dedicated to hand surgery: the FESSH Congress brought leading experts, researchers, and professionals from across Europe together at the Congress Center Basel. Under the theme “Restoration of the Balance to Improve Hand Function,” participants discussed current developments, innovative treatment methods, and interdisciplinary approaches in hand surgery and hand therapy.
With around 3,000 participants, the congress was one of the most important European professional events in its field. This year’s scientific programme included lectures, workshops, case studies, and networking formats covering topics such as microsurgery, rehabilitation, robotics, and tissue engineering. The interdisciplinary exchange between surgery and hand therapy, which characterised the congress, was particularly appreciated.
The social programme also provided opportunities for personal encounters and international networking. The opening ceremony and welcome reception at the Congress Center Basel, as well as the evening event at the Altes Kraftwerk Basel, created a relaxed atmosphere outside the scientific programme.
Once again, Basel proved to be an ideal host city for international professional congresses: the short distances between the venue, hotels, and the Old Town, as well as its excellent accessibility within Europe, facilitated exchange among participants and contributed to the unique congress atmosphere.
The FESSH Congress 2026 demonstrated impressively how important personal encounters remain for scientific progress and international collaboration.
Krisztina Szigedi, Management FESSH, shares this view: «Basel is not only a beautiful destination, but also an accessible, welcoming, and highly walkable city. The excellent support and professional client care provided by Basel Tourism and the Canton of Basel-Stadt were invaluable and played a key role in the success of our event.»
